An Exploratory Study of Factors Affecting Attitude toward Euthanacia

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to identify level of attitude toward euthanasia; and to identify and test various factors which are closely related to attitude toward euthanacia.
This study hypothesized that age, sex, job, education, religion, information about euthanacia, clinical experience, and experience observing dying persons would be related to the attitudes toward euthanacia for family members, for his or her own and toward future legislation for euthanacia.
Three hundred and twenty three Korean professional and non professional men and women within various ranges of age and education participated in this study. Each attitude toward euthanacia was measured using 13 semantic differential scale.
The findings obtained from this study were as follows:
1. Attitude scale for testing euthanacia shoved high internal reliability.
2. Attitude toward euthanacia was approaching to positive direction.
3. Job, level of education and religion were identified as significantly related to attitude toward euthanacia either in total group or in medical and nursing professional group. However, the amount of variance of each variable or total variables was minimum.
In conclusion, there was no variable which consistently influences the attitude toward euthanacia at significantly level and whose amount of variance significantly accounts for the attitude toward euthanacia.
It was recommended to conduct an experimental study to clearly identify significant variables which influence attitude toward euthanacia. In the future study, variables such as personality trait, value system to death and dying, systemic learning experience of death and dying as well as variables significant in this study should be tested to determine whether these variables are closely related to the attitude.
